Sketching Through The Text
What is it? Sketching Through The Text allows students to draw simple pictures and diagrams throughout their reading. They can describe anything in the text and do not need to artists to do well.
Why is it important in the music classroom? This is an important tool because text is often a huge component of musical expression. By sketching through the text, students are visualizing the text and creating further expression to work from.
How is it implemented?
The teacher models a series of sketches for students to draw from. These should reflect the subject material and should be simple sketches, despite the teacher’s artistic ability.
Students are then given a text and they are encouraged to draw next to the text, or on a separate sheet of paper.
Students may share drawings with the class and discuss what they visualized.
