Exit Slips
What is it? Exit slips are used at the end of class. Students are given notecards or slips of paper and they are to write about something wondered about, something they noticed, what they predict will come later or a thought about any element of reading – including author bias, character analysis, vocabulary enrichment and may others. The teacher uses this as a tool to identify where students are struggling, need clarification, or where they are excelling.
Why is it important in the music classroom? In music, as in any subject, teachers need to constantly assess their teaching methods and the understanding of the students. It also allows the teacher the opportunity to revisit other ideas from previous activities and create a more streamlined classroom. How is it implemented? The teacher gives students 2 – 3 minutes at the end of class to answer a question(s) the teacher has posed. This/these question(s) should be relatively broad and clear; for example, “What did I learn and what am I still confused about?” Exit Slips are not graded. After going through the responses, pick key ideas and utilize them in a class discussion. What strategies are used during an Exit Slip?
