Brainstorming
What is it? Brainstorming is often a group activity in which teachers give a specific topic to the students and ask them to share or write down everything they associate with the topic; students are to call out any ideas or thoughts without worry others may judge them. The goal with this activity is that students provide as many notions as possible because quantity is more important than quality. Why is it important in the music classroom? Brainstorming is important in all classrooms because it prepares the learner for the day and activates his or her prior knowledge of the subject. How is it implemented? Brainstorming is easy to use in the music classroom. In most cases, it can be used in the beginning of class to prepare students for the lesson of the day; however, it can also be used when starting a new piece or examining a new aspect of the piece such as dynamics.
